Optimum Utilization of Energy Transmission Backbone in Eastern Europe

LIOS DTS - Optimum Utilization of Energy Transmission Backbone in Eastern Europe LIOS Technology successfully provided an integrated thermal monitoring solution for a strategically important interconnection aerial line in Eastern Europe.

The LIOS DTS system was supplied to provide distributed temperature measurement by means of a fibre integrated into a replaced optical phase conductor (OPPC).

The DTS covers the entire 17 km range of the three-core bundle 400kV transmission line. The applied Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR) principle ensures a temperature survey even over long distances at the decisive spatial resolution of 1 m.
It provides an invariant spatial resolution along the entire sensor length and a satisfactory temperature resolution of less than 1°C, which ensures early identification and clearly measurement of atypical hotspots (e.g. tower shadows). In addition to the phase conductor temperature, the electrical and metrological data are integral parameters for the established dynamic rating system (RTTR). All data are made online available through the SCADA system of the utility.

The integrated monitoring solution generates:

  • Safety – Avoid and respond appropriately to critical load situations
  • Optimization  – Utilize the existing grid capacity to an optimum
  • Dynamic and Flexibility – With dynamic rating to a flexible energy backbone

Condition Monitoring for Heavy Industry Facility in Northern China

LIOS EN.SURE ChinaRecently, during the frosty winter period in North China the commissioning of a large scale power cable monitoring project was completed for China’s energy demanding heavy industry.  LIOS Technology’s latest EN.SURE technology was selected for this industry project with especially 220 kV high voltage power cable systems, 2 transformer stations and comprehensive installation layouts with both tunnel and outdoor cable tray sections. A total of more than 70 km of fibre optic sensing cable was installed for real time thermal monitoring of the entire high voltage cable circuits. Dynamic cable loads together with extreme weather conditions – both, very hot summers and very cold winters – motivates the owner to operate seamless condition monitoring by distributed temperature sensing (DTS).

COMETA: HVDC Submarine Cable to Link Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands

For REE (Red Electrica de España), the owner and operator of the largest part of Spain’s power transmission grids, a consortium between Nexans and Prysmian Cables & Systems delivered a high voltage DC 250kV/500MW submarine power link between the Spanish mainland and the Balearic island of Mallorca. The submarine power cable is 240km long and is buried in the sea at a depth of maximum 1410m. COMETA, the name of this project (abbreviation for COnexión MEditerránea Transporte Alta tension), is of strategic importance for the development of Spain’s national energy transmission network, and links the biggest island in the Balearic archipelago with the mainland, providing access to generating capacities available on the peninsula.

LIOS’ multi mode and single mode Distributed Temperature Sensing systems offer real time temperature surveillance of this important link to avoid overheating of the submarine conductors and subsequently power outage.

cigre B1LIOS Technology GmbH- Linear Optical Sensors is pleased to invite you to attend the conference “ Redes Subterraneas De Energia Electrica 2011 ”, taking place in São Paulo, Brazil.

The Brazilian National Study Committee of Cigré B1 – Insulated Cables – is going to promote an International Workshop on Insulated Cables Workshop Internacional Sobre Cablos Eletricos , this year in São Paulo, Brazil.

The workshop taking place 20 – 22 June 2011, will be composed of short tutorials with international specialists on the following subjects:

  • State of the art of technologies for maintenance of underground transmission lines (138 kV and above). The preferential methodologies that will be focused will be: measurement of partial discharges in field, detection and localization of small oil leakages in OF cables, and other maintenance edge technologies.
  • Monitoring of underground transmission lines in real time: distributed temperature, current capacity, partial discharge, etc.
  • Methods of calculation of magnetic fields of underground transmission lines and mitigation of magnetic fields generated by underground facilities.
  • New technologies for high voltage cables and accessories: high-temperature superconductors, hybrid joints, Y joints, “plug in” joints and terminations.

LIOS Technology is participating with two tutorials captioned “New Technologies for Maintenance and Monitoring Systems of Insulated Cables” (Novas Tecnologias De Manutencao E Sistemas De Monitoramento De Cablos Isolados De AT) focusing on new trends for real time condition monitoring of insulated high voltage cables. Theoretical backgrounds as well as hands-on experience of recent projects serve as a base for interesting discussions with the Brazilian specialists on insulated cables.
